Five mornings a week over the last two months (September 1-October 31 2010), this season's morning flight counter, Tom Johnson, has scrambled up the face of the 60-foot dike at dawn to record the amazing northbound flights that occur here in fall.

The Essentials: Here are the tools of the trade for counting the morning flight. Each of the four-letter codes across the top of this counter represents a species. There are several of these counters, plus a number of individual hand clickers (see photo below) employed to record the counts.

In the midst of a big flight there is no time to look away or to record data by writing it down, so the counters use an array of hand clickers to count individuals. More common species, like Yellow-rumped Warbler and American Robin have a dedicated hand-held clicker. When it is really happening, Tom and the "swing counter" who relieves him on the two days a week he gets to sleep in, adorn their hands with multiple shiny metal clickers. This data collection is spearheaded by New Jersey Audubon's Cape May Bird Observatory, which has been "officially" running these counts since 2003.

Powell joined the Brewers in 1996 and was named the 1998 Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year. In addition to his radio duties, he spent time as a member of the Brewers television team during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.

Chip Caray is in his 12th season as the play-by-play announcer for Braves games on Bally Sports South and Bally Sports Southeast. He previously spent five seasons (2005-09) as the play-by-play voice of TBS's Major League Baseball coverage and Braves' broadcasts on Peachtree TV.

Caray served as the play-by-play announcer for seven seasons (1998-2004) for Chicago Cubs games on WGN. The 2004 Illinois Sportscaster of the Year, Caray's baseball resume also includes one season as the radio play-by-play announcer for Minnesota's Orlando (AA) affiliate in 1990, two years (1991-92) broadcasting the Atlanta Braves and three campaigns (1993-95) with the Seattle Mariners.

He is the third generation of Carays to serve as a play-by-play announcer, after his father Skip and grandfather Harry, who was the play-by-play voice of the Cubs from 1982 to 1997. A member of the Hall of Fame, Harry spent 53 seasons as a major league broadcaster. On May 13, 1991, the three generations of Carays worked together on a Chicago Cubs/Atlanta Braves game.

Chip's broadcast career also includes nine seasons as the television play-by-play voice of the NBA's Orlando Magic and stints calling both University of Florida and Florida State University football and basketball games for the Sunshine Network.

Simpson played professionally for 11 seasons, beginning in 1973 when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round.
